Motorcycle Voltage Regulator - Rectifier

Engine will not start

 Four stroke engine troubleshoot

Most motorcycles use a battery to supply power for starting and lighting.
The magneto supplies power to the Voltage regulator - Rectifier
This unit plays two rolls
(the unit rectifies and regulates)
The rectifier changes AC voltage to DC voltage
The voltage regulator monitors battery voltage and routs power to it when voltage falls below 12V*

Testing Voltage Regulator

1. Set volt meter to VDC
Read battery voltage:
12V is good
less than 12V indicates poor battery

Replacement motorcycle batteries

2. Start engine
Read battery voltage at idle speed
13-14.2V is good
(a working VR will cause some increase in voltage)
Above 14.2V is bad
No increase in voltage indicates
 Bad connection
 or
  Faulty voltage regulator

3. Rev engine 1500 RPM +
read voltage
Reading Above 15V indicates a faulty VR, Replace voltage regulator

Signs of faulty voltage regulator by overcharging or spike
Blowing light bulbs
Exploding or swollen battery
Hot wiring

* Most 12 volt voltage regulators rout 13.8-14.2V to the battery .
